Health and Safety

Safety is our priority

Safety is the number one priority for Bravus Mining and Resources.  We believe any loss of life in the workplace is unacceptable and that all work injuries are preventable.

We have a zero-fatality record and that is not something we will ever take for granted because making sure our people go home safely to their families is our number one priority.

From our employees, to the contractors we work with and the communities we work in, safety underpins everything we do. Upholding the highest of safety standards is a key part of both our operational performance and our social licence to operate. This includes access to medical support and emergency services if required. Learn more about our partnership and emergency services preparedness with our partnership with the CQ Rescue

Our objectives are not only to comply with all relevant health and safety laws and standards, but also continuously improve our safety management systems and create a positive safety culture. We strive for a culture of ongoing vigilance and shared responsibility, where safety outcomes are a priority for everyone.

This is delivered in the workplace through our Health and Safety Policy, which includes a shared accountability and responsibility to:

  • Follow approved work practices, procedures, instructions and rules;
  • Act on and mitigate all unsafe situations that come to our attention;
  • Work in a way that ensures the health and safety of ourselves and others;
  • Encourage others to work in a safe and healthy manner; and
  • Participate in health and safety training.

Contractor safety

Bravus Mining and Resources’ wholistic approach to safety is focussed on the comprehensive management of contractors, subcontractors, service providers, suppliers, consultants, mine project partners and labour hire.

This has included the development of a specialist Contractor Management Plan which creates a single line of reporting and one point of accountability, the Contract Holder, between contractors (and subcontractors) and the Senior Site Executives (SSEs).

Safety representatives from our contracting partners also participate in safety meetings.

Onsite safety

Operations at the Carmichael mine are governed by a comprehensive safety management system.

All personnel at the Carmichael mine undertake role-specific training which aligns directly with their roles and responsibilities on site.

Our Field Leadership Program ensures a pathway for improving health, safety and environmental performance.

The program is built on the principles of clear communication between leadership and personnel, a continuous review of health, safety and environment systems, risk management, and a culture of care across the site.

The Field Leadership Program is a dynamic approach to managing health, safety and environmental outcomes that is evidence-driven and in a constant process of review, feedback and improvement.

Health and safety statistics are shared regularly with our workers to provide transparency about operations and create an environment in which feedback is encouraged.

Our commitment to onsite safety includes rigorous monitoring of air quality.

Mental Wellbeing Roadmap

Bravus Mining and Resources has set out a Mental Health Wellbeing Roadmap which empowers our workers with the tools needed to manage their mental wellbeing and support their colleagues.

The four-phase roadmap starts by tapping into the depth of experience within our team.  The peer support approach encourages early intervention and reaches those people who might not otherwise ask for help.

The Roadmap builds upon that strong foundation with additional stages that focus on mental health tools and techniques, and prioritising suicide awareness and prevention, and reducing stigma.

The final phase adopts an “always on” approach to keep mental wellbeing permanently on the radar of all our workers and management team.

Peer Support Program

There are challenges and stress with every job, but the long hours and time away from friends and family during a swing can make the mining industry particularly tough. With a large proportion of FIFO workers, those pressures can be exacerbated by the risks of isolation and the combination of both home and work pressures.

To combat the additional stressors Bravus Mining and Resources has introduced the Peer Support Program.

The program relies on volunteers within the organisation who are trained in methods to assist team members who are affected by stress. They become the friendly face and listening ear that their colleagues might need to get through a tough time.

Volunteers undertake a two-day training course to provide them with the skills to be a Peer Supporter. The program’s strength is built upon the skills of effective listening, showing empathy and being available to talk when needed.
