Bravus Mining and Resources statement on anti-coal activists’ racial discrimination complaint

The following is attributable to a Bravus Mining and Resources spokesperson:

“We wholly reject the allegations made by Mr Burragubba in this latest attempt to stop Bravus from telling our side of the story and sharing facts with the public about our interactions with him and members of his ‘Family Council’, including his son Coedie McAvoy (also known as Gurridyula) who has been found guilty of assaulting two mine workers and who has issued public threats via social media to our cultural heritage workers asking if they were willing to “die for their job”.

“Mr Burragubba and his allies in the anti-fossil fuel movement have tried for many years to discredit our company and stop our Carmichael mine which has been operating safely and responsibly in line with Queensland and Australian law and in partnership with the majority Traditional Owner group for the mining area under the terms of ratified Indigenous Land Use Agreements and Cultural Heritage Management Plans for more than two years.

“Mr Burragubba has acted at the behest of anti-fossil fuel groups such as the Sunrise Project which paid his minority group more than $300,000 in 2014 to campaign for them against our mine.

“We have a right to defend our business and shine a light on the behaviour of Mr Burragubba, Mr McAvoy, and any others who act for their cause, and we will continue to do so.

“Bravus is not in receipt of any notification from the Australian Human Rights Commission of a complaint.”
